IWMI installs Portalets for Ondoy victims
IWMI joins our community in assisting the victims of Tropical Storm Ondoy. As of October 7, 2009 IWMI has installed more than 100 portalets in various areas such as Marikina, Pasig, Taguig and Quezon City.
Thousands of residents crowded an evacuation area making it difficult for the government to attend to the needs of each person such as food, water, medicines and a lot more. Proper sanitation was one of the main problems of the evacuees who stayed at classrooms, schools and government gyms. Good thing, portalets provide proper sanitation for areas that need immediate action. Since portalets are waterfree, proper disposal of human wastes in areas that are widely crowded become more hygienic and manageable. It also prevents diseases such as cholera, typhoid, shigella, polio, meningitis, and hepatitis A and E from spreading.
There is still a growing need for portalets in the evacuation areas. An article from the Philippine Daily Inquirer attests to this fact wherein it was stated that 3000 residents in Cainta, Rizal line up for hours just to be able to access the lone toilet available.
Another batch of IWMI's Portalets will soon will be transported to areas in Visayas and Mindanao.
IWMI Philippines being the pioneer in portalet distribution has responded to national emergencies such as the 1990 Pinatubo Eruption and the 1991 Earthquake.
